The handle faces on the VLAD, made from the horns of Hungarian longhorn cattle, exhibit a wide range of colors and textures. The final appearance of the handle only becomes visible when the rough horn is mounted on the knife handle where it is then hand ground and polished for a perfect fit.

Cattle horn is environmentally friendly and is a natural byproduct of cattle husbandry. Cattle in Hungary roam freely on the Great Hungarian Plain and are tended by the famous Hungarian horsemen, the Csikós. Because they are not fattened on feedlots, the devastating diseases decimating herds in other countries has not affected Hungarian cattle and therefore they are in great demand all across Europe.
