Lets face facts: There are plenty of excellent knife sharpening systems on the market today. . We could not find any way to really improve on them.

What we did find was that whenever we really needed to touch up an edge, those wonderful sharpening systems were nowhere close by! Has anybody ever hiked the Appalachian Trail with a sharpening system? Or tried telling a Rocky Mountain wrangler or Manitoba fishing guide that all those Arkansas oil stones in their pretty cedar boxes with the can of oil were coming along on the hunt or portage? We don’t think so.

So we went to the beautiful Austrian Alps which is also the home to one of Europe’s finest abrasive manufacturers. We told their little Tyrolean elves what we would like in a sharpening stone. In turn, those wonderful elves came up with a really terrific, really light weight, combination sharpening stone that is the cat’s meow. One side of the sharpening stone is coarse for removing those inevitable nicks. The other side is a fine grit, handy for a quick touch up of the blade. It is also great for re-sharpening hooks. The elves even marked the sides for you “groß” and “fein” (as if you couldn’t tell!).

Next stop was at our master leather craftsman’s workshop for a custom case. Made of American belting leather with a snap closure, it features a riveted belt loop on the back and a sewn on (not glued!) Velcro strip for easy attachment to the inside of a tool or tackle box.

The farther afield our wanderlust takes us, the more we rely on this little gem. Drawing on our experience, we have just one suggestion: Don’t leave home without it! We certainly don’t.
